Liaoning is located in the southern part of China’s Northeast, bordering the Yellow Sea and the Bohai Sea to the south, the Korean Peninsula to the east and facing Japan to its southeast. Its land area and population account for 1.5% and 3.2% of the nation’s total land area and population.
In 2006, Liaoning’s GDP grew by 18.0%. The growth of the agricultural, industry and service sectors stood at 10.7%, 19.6% and 11.7% respectively year-on-year. Figure 10.3.1 shows the breakdown of the GDP by sectors.
As illustrated, the industry sector is the leading sector in Liaoning’s economy, comprising 51.1% of the province’s GDP. The service sector is also rather significant, making up 38.3% of the overall GDP. Agriculture lags behind these two sectors, with a contribution of only 10.6% of the GDP.
Fixed asset investments in Liaoning grew by 34.4% from the year before, with investments mainly in the manufacturing and real estate sectors.
